Mersea Island School has been busy researching the issue of plastic polluting the sea and the children have taken part in local beach cleans. Supported by a local educational trust, the school worked with an artist to make a 3D sculpture of 'Sammy the Seal'. The sculpture was made using the plastic the children had collected from the beaches and was based on a winning design from a school-wide competition. The children clearly enjoyed being part of this project and when Sammy the Seal was complete, he was moved to Mersea 'Hard' - the centre of sailing activity on the island. What a fantastic way of bringing the issue of plastic pollution to the attention of visitors, sailors and others using the waters around Mersea Island.
